Smith Academic Technology Center
Bentley University Waltham, MassachusettsTo satisfy Bentley’s growing need for technologically sophisticated, interactive classrooms to support the McCallum Graduate School of Business, Goody Clancy was commissioned to design a new building on a challenging hillside site. This 78,000 SF, four-story center provides a technologically sophisticated, interactive environment to support Bentley's business curriculum.
Relevant Project Information:
- Twenty-seven classrooms with network connections to every student workstation are fully equipped with state-of-the-art audiovisual and multimedia technologies. Entire complex is networked for voice and data communications.
- Two-story financial Trading Room—one of only a handful of such facilities in the U.S.—gives students hands-on experience with trading sessions, risk management, asset valuations, and other financial concepts.
- Distance-learning classroom with video streaming allows individuals to participate in live video conferences.
- The Design and Usability Center offers students instruction in the field of information design and software products.
- The building gracefully navigates a difficult design challenge: a steep hillside that separates Bentley's lower residential campus from its upper academic area. A wide multilevel, glass-walled 'Main Street' connects the multiple building levels that step down the steep incline.
- New communal 'Main Street' offers sweeping views of the woods and campus below, and functions as an important connector for students traversing the hill. It also features multiple, seating clusters to facilitate network access, studying, and impromptu social gatherings.
Sustainable Design:
- Significant storm-water management strategies on hillside site, using rock blasted from ledge.
- Extensive daylighting throughout the building.
